I’m wondering what are the specific differences between the D50, 70, 80, and 100. Those are the ones in my possible price range. I’m an amateur photographer and this will be my first dSLR, although I am proficient at using my film SLR.

Although I don’t like a lot of the guy’s opinions, Ken Rockwell has done a pretty thorough page highlighting feature differences between 50/70/80 (don’t bother looking at the discontinued 100, the D200 that replaced it is superior in every way)
The Nikon D50, D70, D70s and D100 are all discontinued models.
That should leave you with just the D80 to choose!
Congratulations! That was easy!

I argee that Ken Rockwell’s site is a good place to go to check out these models. I also agree with lenslender that the D80 is the only current model on your list. You might look for the D40 and D40X as current models that cost less than the D80.
